Virtue’s sourceforge presence

OK, the “Abandoned Project Takeover” (APT) has been approved at sf.net, and I’m now co-admin of the Virtue Desktops project there with Thomas (playback). I’ve sent an e-mail to Thomas wanting his final blessing to go ahead with the update and takeover, but Mr. Staller has been incommunicado for a while now so I think we’ll just power ahead.

Here’s where I start to need help. Virtue deserves a community — you guys are that community. I don’t have the time to maintain the community and to continue developing Virtue — my full-time job takes up too much of my energy. Wanna help? I want your help.

Here’s what I need: people who are willing to help me update the <http://virtuedesktops.sourceforge.net/> site, help me move the appcast there and begin sifting through the bug reports and feature requests. It’s not glamorous work, but it needs doing.

And before you ask, yes, I do want development help, but I would like to start up the mailing lists again to discuss architecture again first — all of the good OSS projects I know of have strong (dictatorial) leadership — I’m going to follow suit for the moment.

Update: After all that effort, Sourceforge’s services were sub-par in certain areas. The VirtueDesktops project has moved to new hosting at cocoaforge, which is graciously provided by imajes.

Very good stuff.

I'm assuming Thomas would be heartily welcomed back if he should so choose.

Does this mean the sources will be published? Not that I want them, but more to make sure someone else can pick up where you left off if you should give up on it, or perhaps even help while you're still into it :)

Btw: Still no workie on Intel.

Thomas will always be welcome back. It is his project :)

Add to that, his copyright is on every source file in the VIrtue tree!

Yes, the source will be posted, and yes, as I mentioned in the posting I do want help — I just plan on being a bit strict about architecture and the like.

Spot on about the best OSS projects having dictatorial leaders =D

But, what are you asking for us to do here? You want us to join the mailing lists on SF?

More specifically, go join the mailing lists for virtue's sourceforge project. Get them started again so we can talk about it's future, what's wrong with it (hopefully what's right with it too!).

There is only one mailing list — virtuedesktops-announce — which doesn't seem like the ideal place for discussion. I've signed up, but does it even allow posting by anyone but admin?

I think a Virtue-Discuss, Virtue-Users or Virtue-Devel list would be better, no?

I'm also now “monitoring” the two forums (whatever that means). But SF.net is way to slow to make forums a viable medium for discussion IMNSHO.

I'll test post to virtuedesktops-announce…

My post to virtuedesktops-announce is “awaiting moderator approval”. I think we need a list creating specifically for discussion…

We should have an irc channel for the community. I have started channel #virtue on irc.freenode.net Join in!

Ok so now I'm subscribed to:

<http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/virtuedesktops-development>

and

<http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/virtuedesktops-users>

irc is also good.

I've been checking in on the irc channel, but no-one is there… oh well. SourceForge.net is now up and running — the code is available, and 0.52r87 is available in file releases. Full steam ahead I guess!
